₹32,490 crore a month in SIPs. What the flows mean for large portfolios
Monthly SIP money hit a record in September 2026 while the industry’s assets fell 5.1%. For investors with crores in funds, the plan you hold matters more than the headline.

AMFI publishes mutual fund data every month. The September 2026 release shows two things moving in opposite directions: regular monthly investing kept rising, while the industry’s total assets fell.
The SIP side
- ₹32,490 crore went into SIPs in September, a record, up from ₹32,297 crore in August and about 11% more than September 2025 (₹29,361 crore).
- It was the seventh month in a row above ₹30,000 crore.
- About 63 lakh new SIP accounts were registered in the month.
- Money in SIP-linked investments stood at ₹17.86 lakh crore at the end of September.
The industry side
| August 2026 | September 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Total assets of all mutual funds | ₹87.08 lakh crore | ₹82.64 lakh crore |
The fall came mostly from debt funds: across all schemes, redemptions of ₹16.59 lakh crore exceeded new money of ₹15.25 lakh crore, a net outflow of about ₹1.33 lakh crore. Equity funds took in a net ₹38,307 crore in the same month. Against September 2025, total assets are still up 9.3%.
What it means for a large portfolio
- Steady domestic money is now a feature of the market. ₹30,000 crore or more arrives every month whatever the news, which is part of why Indian equities have leaned less on foreign flows.
- A falling total does not mean investors are leaving equity. Quarter-end months often see large debt-fund withdrawals by companies; equity flows went the other way.
- Check the plan type, not just the fund. The same fund comes in a direct plan and a regular plan, and the regular plan’s expense ratio is higher because it pays a distributor. If the gap is 0.75 percentage point, that is ₹75,000 a year on every ₹1 crore, every year, before compounding. Your fund’s factsheet lists both expense ratios.
- Count your SIPs. Large portfolios often carry a dozen or more, started at different times for different goals, many overlapping in what they hold.
