Six free money lessons for India: SIPs, inflation, mutual fund fees, emergency funds, term insurance and tax-free equity gains. Each has a calculator and a quiz. The first two lessons need no sign-up.
Basics
How money grows, and how inflation shrinks it.
Why starting early wins: Why does starting a SIP early make such a difference? 4 min Returns earn their own returns, so time matters more than the amount. ₹10,000 a month from age 25 to 35, then left invested, grows to about ₹4.6 crore by 60 at 12% a year. The same SIP from 35 to 60 reaches about ₹1.9 crore, even though it puts in ₹30 lakh instead of ₹12 lakh.
What inflation does to your money: How much will today’s expenses cost in the future? 3 min At 6% inflation, prices double about every 12 years. A ₹1 lakh monthly spend today becomes about ₹1.8 lakh in 10 years and ₹3.2 lakh in 20 years. Plans for retirement or a child’s education should use those future prices, not today’s.
Growing
Cut fund fees and build an emergency fund.
The 1% that costs lakhs: How much more does a regular mutual fund plan cost than a direct plan? 4 min A regular plan usually charges 0.5% to 1.5% a year more than the direct plan of the same fund, to pay the distributor’s commission. On ₹10 lakh invested for 20 years at 12%, a fee 1% higher leaves you with about ₹14.5 lakh less.
Your emergency fund: How big should my emergency fund be? 3 min Keep six months of expenses, including EMIs, rent and insurance premiums. Keep 9 to 12 months if your income is irregular or one person earns for the family. Hold it in a savings account, sweep-in FD or liquid fund so you can get it within a day.
Protecting
Work out how much life cover your family needs.
How much life cover you need: How much term life insurance do I need? 5 min Add your family’s yearly expenses for the years they would need support, your loans and big goals like education, then subtract savings and cover you already have. A family spending ₹12 lakh a year for 20 years, with ₹40 lakh of loans, ₹50 lakh of goals and ₹30 lakh saved, needs about ₹3 crore.
Tax
Use the tax exemption you get every year.
Tax-free gains every year: How do I book equity gains tax-free in India? 4 min Each financial year, the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains on listed shares and equity funds is tax-free. Above that, tax is 12.5% plus cess. Selling and buying back enough to book ₹1.25 lakh of gains each year uses the exemption and raises your purchase price for later.
