How much gold do Indian households own? Estimates differ by nearly 10,000 tonnes
The World Gold Council says up to 25,000 tonnes. A Morgan Stanley note says 34,600. Nobody counts it directly, which is why the numbers disagree.

Gold is the one asset almost every Indian family holds, and the one no official register counts. Jewellery passes between generations, coins sit in lockers, and most of it was bought for cash years ago. So every national figure is an estimate.
The estimates
| Source | Estimate of gold held in India |
|---|---|
| World Gold Council (long-standing estimate) | up to 25,000 tonnes |
| Morgan Stanley note (June 2025) | 34,600 tonnes |
The gap is about 9,600 tonnes. Estimates are usually built by adding up imports and domestic supply over decades and subtracting what was melted, recycled or exported, and each step needs assumptions.
Why it matters at home
- Gold is often left out of a family’s net worth. Jewellery is rarely valued, so it can be a large asset that never appears in any statement.
- Its value moves with the price. When gold prices rise, households feel no richer because nothing is sold, but the share of gold in their wealth goes up.
- Physical gold and gold funds are taxed differently. Physical gold, held for more than 24 months, is taxed at 12.5% on the gain; gold ETFs follow the rules for listed units.
Why it matters more as wealth grows
Take a family with ₹5 crore in funds, shares and deposits and ₹50 lakh of jewellery that has never been valued. Counting the jewellery moves gold from 0% to about 9% of what they own, which changes the picture of everything else they hold.
Counting your own
Weigh what you own, note the purity (22 or 24 carat) and multiply by the current rate for that purity. Reva lets you add gold by hand with an approximate value and updates your net worth with it.
